Mmmm.. Scuppernongs In Season September 30, 2005

Like the arrival of the first cold tepid front, scuppernongs in the grocery store means autumn is almost here. The electric co-op can soon cease sending statements that have me rushing to turn off every light gadget and gizmo in the house.

What? Never heard of scuppernongs? I can fix that while fixing breakfast.

Scuppernongs, a kissin’-close cousin of the muscadine grape grows wild down here and could rightly be listed as the official Southern Fruit that Fed the Depression. Looking just like oversized round grapes, they are ready for picking in late summer/early fall.

Scuppernongs are made into wine, preserves, jellies, jams, impromptu cousin bombs and taste good right off the vine. They are abundant on most roadsides here if the kudzu doesn’t smother them.

Next time I visit the local farmer’s market I’ll buy some and upload an image. I need to go anyway; the ornamental gourds are in season. Did you know rubbing gourd bumps ensures a season of good luck?

Red flags are still flying and red tide is still smothering the fish in some areas but the local fishing charter skippers say it should be gone soon. Restaurant owners are having a hard time getting seafood and honestly, I question any restaurant with oysters on the menu, especially if they’re labled “fresh” until the state reopens Apalachicola Bay oyster beds.

Swim safe. Eat safe. Drink all you want.

A List of wordpress.com Blogs September 29, 2005

I am assembling a link category of active wordpress.com blogs. I don’t know if there’s a list somewhere out there so it’ll be a slow accumulation; if anyone can recommend some I’d appreciate the help.

Update: I am gathering a list of wordpress.com blogs at blogrolling.com. If anyone wants the OPML, I’ll make it available. If anyone wants to help add/edit, even better.

If I missed your blog and you want to be included, let me know. Inversely, anyone who does not want to be listed will be removed, just ask. Most of the blogs I’ve listed are ones I’ve visited or spotted in the Dashboard or on the Tag page that are active (except for the now famous “Hello World,” of course).

Update#2: It’s still a short list, but if anyone wants it here’s the OPML.

Red flags up, surf’s up, kids up and skipping school to grab some board time before the weather gets chilly and the wetsuits get wet.

Hurricane Ivan put a dent in sand crab population making sitting on the beach a bore. I miss watching children chase them back into their holes. It’s a little too quiet without the random howls and squeals when one crawls across a tourist’s foot.

Cute little quiz link I picked off the dandy Ubuntu Fridge Blog:

You are .swf You are flashy, but lack substance. You like playing, but often you are annoying. Grow up.

Which File Extension are You?

Annoying? Annoying?? Me??? Well, yeah.

Houston Death Toll “A small, small number” September 28, 2005

The number of Rita-related deaths is an estimated 31 today, according to the Houston Chronicle, not counting the 23 nursing home evacuees who died in a bus fire in Dallas County.

Beverly Begay, chief investigator of the Harris County medical examiner’s office, explained the death toll in her skewed perspective:

“Considering around 2.8 million people evacuated within a short amount of time, this is a relatively small, small number,” Begay said.

No, no, it is not.

Traffic in Harris County gridlocks on a normal workday, common knowledge to everyone in and around Houston. In Galveston there are three routes off the island but I-45 North toward Houston was the only FEMA approved evacuation route. The other two were not mentioned, either would have taken drivers out of the area without the need to travel through Houston.

More about this here and here.

In a sick replay of Hurricane Katrina, government officials gloated over their well-planned hurricane response days before Rita made landfall. Now they claim it wasn’t so bad afterall. I doubt the people who waited in 100-degree heat agree nor do I believe the families grieving over their dead think it was a success.

All this while people in remote areas of Texas and Louisiana continue to wait for rescue. I am tired of pointing fingers; it is not in my nature. But Katrina v.2.0 makes it impossible not to feel an impotent anger that will not subside until the officials responsible can prove they really do give a damn.

The image “https://leita.files.wordpress.com/2005/09/yellow.jpg? cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.Today’s beach condition in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Yellow flags flying ’round the coast means the water is moderately wavy and open to the public. Rip currents, stingrays, sharks, dog flies and pale, unattractive tourists can still exist, so bob with caution.

Is there anyone else brand new to wordpress.com, futzing with their blog and feeling like the new guy/gal in town? There is a community feel here I didn’t expect and I’d like to get to know some other people who are new, too.

C’mon, click the comment link and introduce yourself while I poke around and read the other blogs. Send me a link to yours and I’ll come by for a visit.
