Books of Sand – Pity it Got Duggled October 28, 2005

Books of Sand features a glass box filled with sand. It also involves a computer, a camera, a projector, and hypertexts taken from the Web. When viewers sift the sand through their fingers, projected codes from the Web interact with the movement of their hands. The text moves as a fluid and then disappears.

The “F” Word October 28, 2005

Posted by Leita in Browsers, Flotsam/Jetsam.

I do not dislike Fl0ck* but I am growing weary of seeing it incessantly blogged about. Fl0ck has been dissected, reviewed, studied, adored and loathed to the point some of my favorite blogs are a big o’ bore now.

Since it ranks #5 in Technorati’s top searches, I suppose those who value their site traffic (or make a living off it) need to join the banter. Fine, but please do the rest of us a favor and write about something else, too.

It’s a big o’ goofy world, my darlings; I’d enjoy reading about some of it for a change.

*Word mungled intentionally.

Fun With 30gigs and WordPress Invites October 25, 2005

In the preceeding post Invites to 30gigs.com Available, a chronic commenter has left several cryptic messages in an unintelligible language. It’s obvious he/she is asking for an invite but in what language? What exactly is being said? The best I can decypher is “I gave.. “

Can you do better? Post a comment explaining what this person is saying and in what language and I’ll give you a 30gigs.com invite. Make it clever, witty and well-written and I’ll throw in a WordPress.com invite as well.

Extra points for commenters who will use the wordpress invite to start an engaging blog on any topic that does not focus on video games, Web2.0, the latest buzz or use the word “meme” more than once a month.

Ning: Worth Waiting for the Invite October 20, 2005

Screenshot of Ning After waiting a week for an email from Ning declaring my long awaited developerosity, and playing with it for a little while, it was worth the wait.

The learning curve for someone semi-comfortable with php is .. well, there’s not much of one. It just makes sense.

Clone your favorite app then tweak to fit. It doesn’t take a php wizard to customize; I was able to get a simple social map app cloned and going in about an hour.

Check your email.

After that, do read the instructions carefully. This ain’t your mama’s install.

1. The Import Wizard appears when you start Flock. Click Cancel. We
recommend that you not import settings from other browsers (importing of
favorites won’t work, in any event, that’s a known bug – we’ll fix it soon)

2. After Flock comes up, we suggest that you click the Star button
that’s in the URL bar. You’ll be asked if you’d like to share your
Favorites. Give it a spin, but keep in mind that all your favorites
will be publicly viewable.

— If you have a del.icio.us http://del.icio.us> account, enter your
username and password. Click the checkbox that tells the Password
Manager to remember. Then click OK.
— If you’d like to get a del.icio.us http://del.icio.us> account, head
over to http://del.icio.us/register

That’s it — you’re ready to go! After playing with this build for a
while, please let us know what you think by filling out the survey or
feedback form that are linked from the start page.

For release notes, help and support, and more information on anything
else that’s Flock, check out the browser’s start page.

A brand new place for all things creative, Designorati gathered together over 300 Halloween fonts from the web. Some have been around for a long time but there are a few that I haven’t seen before. A thoughtful list from a site worth checking out.

Skype Trojan October 19, 2005

Posted by Leita in Internet.

The title got my attention but it wasn’t what I feared.

According to the Skype blog, emails w/ the IRCbot trojan attached are starting to appear in inboxes, similar to bogus emails that have been going around for years from eBay and PayPal. The email subject goes something like this: ‘Hello. We’re Skype and we’ve got something we would like to share with…; Share Skype.; Skype for Windows 1.4; Skype for Windows 1.4 – Have you got the new Skype?; What is Skype?’

From the Skype blog:

Skype never sends software updates by e-mail. We do send information about your orders if you bought something from us, and we send newsletters and survey invitations, if you opted in to receive Skype e-mail when you registered your Skype Name, but that’s it. So if you receive a software update e-mail from Skype, please delete it, and tell others to do the same.

Seems silly to remind anyone not to click on links in an email or IM no matter how legit they look, but until I stop making steady pay cleaning up other people’s crap-ridden computers, I’ll keep posting.
