Notes and Comments: The Launch of TimesSelect October 4, 2005

Posted by Leita in Internet.

From the mouths and keyboards of student journalists, quotes regarding NYT’s decision to charge readers via TimesSelect.

Outing: “Steve Klein, an online journalism professor at George Mason University, says one of his students raised an excellent point during a class discussion this week about TimesSelect: ‘Even if the Times picked up most of its existing online readers, how are they going to grow a new generation of online Op-Ed readers if they keep the columnists behind a pay firewall?’ Good question.?

Very good. Another question, this one mine: Are a couple dozen op-ed writers as valuable as, say, a half dozen talented blog writers at the scene who can lead their readers into real news stories via their blogs? The NYT is a fine news source. Its op-edders are top-notch reading. But are they worth $50 a year when there are bloggers eager to tell their story on the fly for free?
